On March 14th and 15th, I had the opportunity to participate in the Netnod event held in Stockholm, Sweden.

Netnod is a Stockholm-based organization that provides critical infrastructure support ranging from Internet peering and traffic exchange services to time services, DNS services, and I-root server operations.

LACNIC has signed an agreement with Netnod to deploy copies of the I-root server in the Latin American and Caribbean region through the +RAICES program. So far, 13 I-root servers have already been deployed in various countries and several others are in the process of being installed.

The latest edition of the Netnod event drew more than 250 participants, who attended 24 presentations on topics such as value-added IX services, DNS threat management, quantum computing, precise time as a national service, cybersecurity, NIS 2, and infrastructure developments ranging from sensor-enabled optical fiber to the latest optical hardware and network innovations.

My participation included not only connecting with the Netnod community and discussing matters related to the installation of root servers with the Netnod staff, but also giving a presentation on the activities and challenges we are working on at LACNIC. This time, I discussed Internet measurements in the LAC region: a study of the paths followed by traffic within the countries of the LAC region, the deployment of the RIPE Atlas measurement platform, and the R&D Ambassador program we launched this year with the aim of deploying infrastructure in the region.

The presentation was received with interest, both regarding the deployment of RIPE Atlas probes and the possibility of deploying other infrastructures in the LAC region, particularly Netnod’s NTP server. NTP is a free, top-of-the-line service and the way in which they provide the strictest PTP currently used by mobile networks. This configuration is quite unique worldwide and allows them not to have to rely exclusively on GPS to synchronize their network.

Presentation highlights included Segment Routing applications and innovation, cooperation between three Swedish banks to combat cyberattacks in the financial environment, precise time as a critical service, and how to connect Sweden to Asia via the Arctic Ocean using submarine cables.

The experience was very enriching in terms of networking opportunities and allowed us to acquire technical knowledge and learn about advances in other regions.
