Challenges for 2014: IPv6 Deployment, Internet Security, and the Growth of the Organization

Boosting IPv6 deployment, creating an Internet security and stability program, and strengthening the organization’s regional presence are the main plans for 2014 as defined by the LACNIC Board during the final meeting of 2013 held in Monterrey, Mexico.

During the meeting held in the first week of December, the LACNIC Board approved the work plan for 2014, a year of major challenges throughout the region, home to more than 10 % of the word’s Internet users.

Within this context, and considering the fact that the region is going through a post-IPv4 address exhaustion period, LACNIC’s Board of Directors decided that one of the organization’s strategic objectives will be to continue to vigorously promote IPv6 deployment. Thanks to this technology, it will be possible to sustain current growth rates for new services, to deploy national broadband plans, and to connect millions of new Internet users throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Today, five out of ten Latin Americans have Internet access and this number is expected to grow over the next 30 months to reach a penetration rate of 60%. This involves a great effort on the part of the organizations working on developing the Information Society.

“This Board meeting has been instrumental in defining 2014 as a period of great challenges for the Internet that will promote social and economic development in the Latin American and Caribbean region,” said Oscar Messano, President of LACNIC’s Board of Directors.

The Board also announced LACNIC’s next meeting and member assembly, LACNIC 21 “Building the Future of the Internet: Security, Transparency and Participation,” to be held in Cancun, Mexico, on 4-9 May 2014.  This will be the third such meeting organized in Mexico by NIC Mexico and LACNIC.
