LACNIC makes significant new commitment to ensure the future of open Internet standards

LACNIC announced a significant new commitment to strengthening the financial foundation of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet’s premier technical standards body. LACNIC’s donation to the IETF Endowment will provide long-term support for the IETF in its mission to produce high-quality, relevant technical and engineering documents, best practices, and standards that influence the way people design, use, and manage the Internet—now and in the future.

“The LACNIC Board decided to make this contribution because the IETF is essential for the development and maintenance of protocols and standards that affect the entire Internet.,” said LACNIC CEO Oscar Robles. “We trust that our donation will motivate others to make similar, significant contributions.”

The Internet Society, a charter contributor to the IETF Endowment, has made a pledge to contribute double the amount of donations, which amplifies the value of LACNIC’s contribution.

“LACNIC’s contribution underscores the importance of the IETF’s work, and the foundational building blocks that open standards provide for the ongoing evolution and continued strength of the global Internet. That foundation enables applications like the Web, email, videoconferencing, and streaming used by billions of people every day,” said Jason Livingood, IETF LLC Board chair. “With this generous and timely contribution, LACNIC has further extended the impact of its commitment through the ISOC double matching, and sets a positive example for other organizations that depend on the Internet to consider similar support.”

LACNIC also joins ARIN, the American Registry for Internet Numbers, and RIPE NCC, the Regional Internet Registry for Europe, the Middle East and parts of Central Asia as organizational IETF Endowment contributors. Individual support of the IETF Endowment is also welcomed.

About the IETF Endowment

The IETF Endowment was a fund established in 2012 to provide long-term financial sustainability of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It transferred to the IETF Administration LLC (IETF LLC) in 2018, when the IETF community formed the IETF LLC as a disregarded entity of the Internet Society (ISOC).  The IETF Endowment was relaunched in 2021 following the development of a new six-year funding agreement with ISOC that provided for a matching opportunity for endowment contributions.
