LACNIC’s 20th Anniversary in Numbers

LACNIC recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its creation, and the growth of regional Internet numbers is an indication of the successful start of the Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean.

According to the latest information available, the number of individuals using the Internet has grown more in Latin America and the Caribbean than the world average.

There are currently 5 billion Internet users worldwide, which represents 60% of the global population. Meanwhile, in the LACNIC region, this figure is 74% (see chart).

The number of members is directly related to Internet development. LACNIC started operating with just 124 organizations. Two decades later, the organization has more than 12,400 members.

Another significant indicator is the number of people who have already attended one or more of the 38 editions of our annual events: more than 12,000 members of the community have already participated.

In addition, since the creation of the LACNIC Campus in 2016, 42,669 people have enrolled in the different courses, including Basic IPv6, Advanced IPv6, IPv6 in Last Mile and Access Networks, BGP Basics and Introduction to RPKI, Introduction to Internet Governance, and others. There are now more than 14,000 people across the region who have completed the training courses offered through this online platform.

LACNIC has also supported the installation of copies of the 13 original Internet servers in the region. This has increased their redundancy and decreased their criticality, in turn allowing for better response capabilities in case of potential DDoS attacks or infrastructure failures. To date, there are 113 copies of Internet root servers in the LACNIC service region.
